Natural Hair Revolution

Agree with it or not the Natural Hair Revolution is on the rise of being globally accepted & embraced amongst African-American women. Similar to the “Black Power” era where African-Americans proudly rocked their natural Afros, the Natural Hair Revolution is all about embracing your hair texture. For roughly 7 years black women everywhere have been scrapping their  chemically relaxed hair for au-natural curls & the trend has been catching on rapidly. The purpose of natural hair is to embrace the hair texture of your hair, some women who are natural also opt not to chemically dye their hair either. I would compare this to a hair detox, to completely remove all chemicals from your hair.

Youtube has become a place where fellow “Naturlistas” to share advice, hair regiments, & encouragement on why they should remain different for the majority of society who enforces straight hair as beautiful. Some of the women by the names of  Nikkimae2003, iknowlee, and bambixx2 are just a few who have aquired quite a following. Many of their videos receive over 10,000 views  on topics ranging from hair tutorials, product reviews, and more. It is safe to say that these women have developed a following in the world of Natural Hair, & can possibly make an impact on the sales of certain hair products.

The future of African American  hair care may soon become as simple as embracing your natural hair texture, at what ever length or curl pattern it may be. From extremely tightly coiled curls to loose wavy curls African-American hair comes in many different textures, there is no one word to correctly define it except ‘natural’. Can this Natural Hair revolution have an impact on the hair relaxer industry? Will companies like “Soft-Sheen Carson”, “Motions”, & “Dark & Lovely” begin to loose money because of this revolution? Is this Natural Hair Revolution just a fad that will go out of style or is it here to stay? Only time can answer these questions but until then I enjoy analyzing the changes in the way African American women are making up their minds on the way they view their beauty & their hair, & not allowing society to dictate what’s beautiful for them.
